THE COLT PATERSON

At 16, Samuel Colt went to sea and carved a model of his first revolver cylinder pistol. When he got back he submitted it to the US patten office on March 6, 1836 (the day the Alamo fell). It was a 5 shot, 36 caliber revolver that had a folding trigger that dropped out of the frame when the hammer was cocked. The Texas Rangers saw the advantages of having 5 shots when facing Comanche Indians and as it turned out, 16 rangers held off 80 Comanche braves in a day long fight using only their Colt Patersons in 1844.
